The Ones We Love

Most years, I have stressed about what I should do to celebrate my wife. What gift to give? Where to go? What to do?

Not this year! This year, we have ChatGPT for questions like that ;)

No, really - I just asked it for 40 valentines gift ideas and one of the suggestions was perfect, haha! Thank you very much!

Have you heard all the rave about this thing? OpenAI’s hottest new product, that Microsoft just invested $10 Billion dollars into? It’s crazy! My mind has been blown to epic proportions at what this robot can do. Business plans, SEO, screenwriting, coding, writing essays or poems or lists, and so, so much more.

… But do you know what it can’t do for you?

Love.

I’m not sure ChatGPT even knows what love is! According to its intelligence, “Love is a complex and multifaceted emotion that can take many forms. It is a personal and subjective experience, and can mean different things to different people. However, its impact on our lives and relationships is undeniable, and it is often considered to be one of the most important and transformative forces in the world.”

What? How can your description come so close, and yet feel so far off?

Probably for the same reason my cooking does compared to my mom’s. It’s that same, secret ingredient.

Am I being too cheesy?

What I’m getting at is this: the way we are towards those we love - the way we serve, we give, we encourage, we sacrifice, we protect, we nurture, we cheer, we teach, we share, and we dream - it’s unlike anything anyone else can do. And as we do, the way we do, with those we do, we begin to taste that not-so-secret ingredient after all.

Love is no easy effort. But keep cultivating, because it’s a work that no human advancement will ever take away from you.

For what it’s worth, my wife usually doesn’t really care what I get her for Valentine’s day. What she cares about is that I cared.

There’s something to this mysterious thing called love!
